In the present study the use of 3-Nitro in the dosage 3mg/kg diet was found to impart a stimulatory effect on growth and early maturation among the treated males and females. The treatment of 3 mg 3-Nitro per kg of diet resulted in a higher percentage of males (70%) as compared to that of 5 mg treatment group (65%) and control group (50%). The treatment of 3 mg 3-Nitro per kg of diet was proved to be the best. Keywords

The treatment of rosy barb with sodium bicarbonate brought a significant improvement in the growth in 50 mg per lit concentration. Thus, from the two experiments using 25 mg and 50 mg of sodium bicarbonate, the concentration of 50 mg/lit sodium bicarbonate was proved to be the best among the two treatments. Keywords

Mirkarwada is one of the important mechanized fish landing center of Ratnagiri. It is well constructed major fishing harbour, which provides a birthing and fish landing facilities for all kinds of vessels, since 1988-89. Wooden gill netters (4), FRP gill netters (6) fitted with marine diesel engine were operated from Mirkarwada, Ratnagiri. Kirloskar W/C model diesel engines (90%) and of Ashok Leyland AL-370 model diesel engine (10%) were fitted on the gill netters. Overall length (OAL) of gill netters ranged from 28.30 to 38.62 ft, breadth 7.15 to 10.15 ft, depth 2.83 to 5.32 ft, gross tonnage 4.14 to 9.54 tonnes, net tonnage 3.6 to 8.29 tonnes, horse power 10 to 99.27 hp, RPM 500 to 1500 rpm, fuel consumption litres per hour 7 to 12 l/hr, propeller diameter 15 to 29.9 inch and propeller pitch 10 to 19.6 inch.

A total of 47 wooden trawlers were in operation from Mirkarwada fishing harbour of Ratnagiri of which 98 per cent were wooden trawlers fitted with Ashok Leyland make diesel engines. The length class of wooden trawlers ranged from i.e. .below 40 ft (6%), 40-50 ft (64%), 50-60 ft (28%) and above 60 (2%) and the horse power of the engines ranged from, below 100 hp (83%), 100-200 hp (15%) and above 200 hp (2%). During the present study, Ashok Leyland (AL-370, AL-400, AL-402) diesel engine were found to be the most popular and commonly installed marine engine on the wooden trawlers. Keywords
